How to develop a New Study Abroad Course or Program
1. Check the USG Study Abroad Directory to ensure it’s not a duplicate program within the
University System of Georgia. In most cases, USG students from any institution can apply to
study abroad programs hosted at another USG institution.
2. Set up a meeting with your department and college to discuss the project. You’ll need
department-wide help with academic program planning and budget-related tasks.
3. Develop a syllabus for the course. Write a detailed course outline, learning outcomes, and
assessment procedures. The course must be in line with the standard curriculum, contact
hours, and assignments. It must meet accreditation standards.
4. Create a budget for the program. This should include:
Transportation (airfare to and from the country, and transportation to and
Housing/lodging
Meals (let participants know how many meals the program will provide)
Insurance (accident, sickness, trip cancellation)
Instruction expenses (room, equipment rental, software costs, guest lecturers
Excursion expenses (field trips, museum admissions, guides, activities costs)
Cost of phone service (to have in case of emergency)
Overhead costs
Funds to build an emergency reserve
Advertising to recruit students
5. If possible, conduct a site visit.
6. Write a proposal (Sample proposal)
7. Submit the proposal to MGA Study Abroad Office for review. The office will set up a
discussion meeting. (Include this form*)
8. After the meeting, the Study Abroad Office will notify you of any questions to address,
corrections, and suggestions.
9. If the proposal is approved, the program must meet all MGA deadlines.
10. The budget must be submitted by the deadline.
